Wedevåg founded in 1538 – one of Sweden’s oldest companies
The business at Wedevåg is first mentioned in the tax rolls of the famous Swedish king Gustav Vasa, in the year 1538. That makes Wedevåg one of the oldest Swedish companies still active. Findings from smelting-house and forge from early iron production has been found near the place where today’s modern industrial premises are located. It indicates activity at this very place as early as during the 14th century.
During the early 18th century Wedevåg is mentioned by the Swedish King Fredrik the Ist, as “The mother of Swedish Industry”. At this time Wedevåg was one of the nation’s largest iron manufacturing industries. In 1721 Wedevåg printed its first standardized price list, the country’s first ever industrial catalogue. The crowned W, was registered in 1779 as the company’s trademark. Then and up until today, our crowned W is synonymous with quality products.
The production of rotary spiral drills began in 1912 and about fifty years later the production of broaching tools started. During the approximately five hundred years that have passed since its founding in 1538, Wedevåg has also manufactured swords, blades, armor, brick, clocks, paint, spades and much, much more. Wedevåg has gone from yesterdays factory and industrial community to today’s fast and efficient business in modern facilities. Wedevågs possibility of change and development has been and still is, a prerequisite for survival in a changing world.
